Circus and physical theatre hits macrobert…

macrobert will be holding the Scottish premiere for Chouf Ouchouf, a physical theatre/circus performance, directed by Zimmerman & de Perrot and performed by Collectif Acrobatique de Tangier, this stunning, acrobatic show is perfect for the whole family, come along and join us for this magical piece…

About the company:

Collectif Acrobatique de Tangier
Weaving together traditional Moroccan acrobatics and modern performance in a poetic exploration of North African culture, Collectif Acrobatique de Tangier delight audiences with their incredible ability and skills. Building on centuries of traditional Moroccan performance honed on the beaches of Tangier, this family company display the tricks of their forefathers with a raw, youthful energy.

Dimitri de Perrot
Dimitri de Perrot was born in 1976 in Neuchatel, Switzerland. After matriculating from the Kunstgymnasium in Zurich he developed further as a self-taught musician and composer. In 1998 he turned his attention to the theater, and began to work as a director.

Martin Zimmermann
Martin Zimmermann was born in 1970 in Winterthur, Switzerland. After an apprenticeship as a set designer, he graduated, with honors, from the Centre National des Arts du Cirque (C.N.A.C.) in France. Following his return to Zurich in 1998 he began to work as a choreographer and director.

There is a full list of the company’s awards at http://www.zimmermanndeperrot.com/prix

What the press say:

A new show performed by Collectif Acrobatique de Tangierwith an insouciant brilliance, they fill the stage with multiple back-flips, dizzying cartwheels, perilous human pyramids and vaulting trampoline stunts …. everyone was spellbound” The Guardian on previous show Taoub

In a new piece by Zimmermann & de Perrot The mix of skill, sleight of hand is irresistible, and the piece has a gleeful magpie tendency – thieving from absurdism, popular cartoons, surrealism and modern dance” The Guardian on their recent LIMF show Oper Opis at Barbican

About the show:

Weaving together contemporary performance and traditional Moroccan acrobatics in a poetic exploration of North African culture, Chouf Ouchouf reflects the daily life in the Medina in a witty and highly skilled show for all ages over seven.

The Medina, the old quarter, where it’s ten to a house, and a hundred to the narrowest street. Shout or you won’t be heard; push to the front or never be seen. Life and colour lies round every corner, animals and cigarette hawkers fill the squares. The city is unruly, chaotic, but no matter the world there are men of power, and beneath the clamour and fights of the market are the whispers of its other life. Dusk falls like a shutter, then the night. Silently the walls open, and amid the maze-like streets and along the rooftops figures move on secret agendas. What, or who, is in the bag?

Returning to the UK with a show about what they know best – their home – the Collectif Acrobatique de Tangier collaborate with Swiss artists Zimmerman and de Perrot to capture the danger, joy and urgency of life in Tangiers. Those who saw the Collectif’s last production, Taoub, will find the group maturer, stronger, yet with the same rough charm, and the same rich language of vernacular acrobatics – passed from generation to generation – that is as natural to them as song. Here they move through a set that floats apart and reassembles to represent the many faces of a bewildering and exciting landscape, taking in the old and the nearly new in search of the city’s beating heart.

mFEST! One week to go!

There is so much going on!

The countdown to mFEST has begun! We are officially one week away! If you check out our lovely sister page www.m-fest.org you will see a shiny bold clock in the left hand corner of the page ticking away…

This week all macrobert staff received a festival briefing from the mPOWER team, with cupcakes! Which were lovely! We heard about all the exciting events and shows going on over the weekend and were given maps to see how the festival will be laid out. Remember entry to the university grounds is free and even if you don’t have much money there is a lot to keep you entertained. We have our free workshops, street theatre, merchandise stalls, open mic stage, new band stage, food stalls and circus games! Phew – how will you fit it all in?

We also had our lovely young volunteers in this week who all were given training in the relevant departments they will be working in over the weekend. For example volunteers will be working as technical runners, in our information hub or as venue ushers – to name a few jobs! We at the macrobet can’t wait to have their young cheery faces giving us some much needed help and us giving them some wonderful work experience.

Just to remind you if you have not already heard, the weekend festival passes have been slashed to half price! That’s £50 full / £42.50 concession / £35 under 18s. Plus you can now also buy a festival day pass for £10 which will allow you to see all access to all events on that day depending on availability at the time of the show. So it is first come, first served. Really this is unbelievable value for money!

One week to go macrobert friends! And we can’t wait!!
