Billy Elliot with a twist

macrobert arts centre and Youth Music Theatre Scotland are presenting Billy Elliot – The Musical this year as their summer youth project – but it’s Billy Elliot with a twist….

We decided to relocate the performance to Fallin, Polmaise Pit. Instead of being set in the north of England, this Billy Elliot will be the Scottish version starring our local youngsters!

Polmaise Pit closed in 1987 after a year long of bitter strike action, fitting in perfectly with the Billy Elliot script.

You can see here Fallin back in the day…

We are the only venue in Scotland which has applied and been successful in changing the location of the story and are very proud of this.

The young people taking part will have the opportunity to talk with Gordon Samson, Chief Superintendent of Community Policing at Central Scotland Police, to get a bit of background about what it was like to live through this difficult period.  Gordon said ‘ Ithink it will give them a deeper understanding of the performance and a connection with the characters too –for them and the audience”.
