mPOWER Project

Hi my name is Bjorn. I am communications manager for the mPOWER project. I’m going to talk a bit about the mPOWER project which I sincerely hope you know about by now otherwise I’m not doing my job very well! Being a creative person and working in the music industry in a number of capacities since my late teens, opportunities and encouragement at school to enter the creative industries were never particularly forth coming. To me the music industry and the people who operated in it were mysterious characters, probably too busy to be interested in helping me achieve my goals and aspirations. To get into the creative industries you had to unlock your own doors, make your own contacts and crucially learn by your own mistakes and experiences. These days there are more opportunities to learn from other ‘industry professionals’ for want of a better term. Empowering young people in the arts has never been so widespread. These days the number of doors open to young people to enter the creative industries is incredible. None more so than in the mPOWER project. Whatsmore the project continues to surpass my expectations: working with young people to guide them in engaging with the arts and ensuring they gain the experiences and enjoyment that the project has promised has proved to be a fulfilling experience. From marketing to film making, music development to artist programming, the project offers real hands on opportunities to young people who wish to pursue an interest or simply learn more about a hobby. Real opportunities, tangible rewards for young people: all something ten years ago, aged sixteen was never on offer to me. So if you’re a young person involved with mPOWER or thinking about getting involved with the arts, take your chance now. I would’ve. Bring on the mPOWER festival!
